    Everything went the CSA’s way on turn 1. The USA had limited mobility and no useful events. Meanwhile Confederate Overseas Agent brought in reinforcements, and Western Concentration Block made it possible to use them for a heavy strike in the east. The USA wasn’t able to intercept. Johnston’s corp raided PA, including Harrisburg, and also occupied Baltimore. The USA spent the rest of the game desperately short of SPs while the CSA got yet another reinforcement card. To make matters worse the USA continued to have low mobility hands with no good events. On turn 3 the CSA was able to use Choctaw Indians to get a double card play at the end of the turn. That made it possible to achieve a breakthrough at Pittsburgh and then run all the way to DC.

    USA was doing fine fortifying and building up its defense. But it did not put pressure on the South which allowed CSA to slowly build up. When the right cards come up, coupled with failed interception and bad battle rolls, AOP was destroyed and 2 CSA armies camped out north of DC. It would only be a matter of time before DC falls too.

    The Union kept up the naval pressure from the start, taking Fts. Philip-Jackson LA, landing Butler at Sabine City TX, and raising the blockade to level 1 on turn 1. A successful intercept by AoP at Frederick halted an attack north by Beauregard. CSA’s luck on the first turn was confined to the Western concentration card which allowed Polk to concentrate forces at Memphis and retake Sabine City. AoNV creation, efforts to gain political control over WV and KY, reinforcements for the CSA canceled out by Contraband, fort construction, general reshuffles, a CSA Major campaign to provide defensive cover at Little Rock, Columbus KY and Dover TN, and Farragut’s appearance for a landing at Mobile AL taking out Ft. Morgan were the elements of turn 2. CSA luck appeared on turn 3 with: 1) Rosecrans, reinforced at Mobile, losing battles at New Orleans and Sabine City, wiping out his command on the latter; 2) Ft. Morgan being recovered with the play of Galveston; and 3) AoNV attack north capturing Harper’s Ferry and Frederick MD. Turn 4 saw McClellan placed in charge of AoP, AoNV returned to Manassas when AoP attempted to cut it’s supply line there with a campaign that also brought reinforcements east from the central region and bolstered the union defenses at Gettysburg, Chambersburg, and recaptured Harpers Ferry. Florida became a theatre for action with a landing at Jacksonville. Additional fighting over KY ultimately saw Smith prevail on the last action of the turn, bringing KY into the CSA column. Turn 5 saw AA raised to 4 and a successful union assault against Ft. Gadsen FL. Despite Jackson’s assignment to KY and the creation of Union AoC in Bloomington, there was no action along the Ohio. Lee in corps command, moved into WV and was looking across the Ohio with the placement of the CSS Arkansas in Parkersburg, but his hopes were dashed by a Union discarder, giving the Union the last play, a PC placement card to restore control over Frederick MD. USA took out the CSS Arkansas and Ft. Morgan AL on turn 6 and built up its defenses at Pittsburg PA. CSA was not to be denied and had the blessings of a kind providence with the creation of AoW under Lee at Grafton WV; a reinforcement card; a run from Charleston to Richmond by Longstreet bringing SP6 reinforcements, which eventually made their way to Lee’s AoW; and a major campaign card as the last action of the turn, which the CSA high command used to conduct a full scale invasion of the north, capturing Chambersburg, Harrisburg, Philadelphia in PA, and Trenton, Camden, and Atlantic City in NJ. USA concession followed.

    USA got great cards early on and built up a nice defense. But it did not put pressure on the South which allowed CSA to slowly build up. With the arrival of Lee and great cards, it all went downhill for the Union. At end of T4, DC is cut off, 2 states raided, and USA reinforcement down to 10 sp. It would only be a matter of time before DC falls too.

    Early USA reinforcements and Ambush to remove Stuart on turn 2 kept CSA on the defensive. USA Majors on last two turns plus Minor proved too much Capturing Richmond and VA plus Texas.

    CSA lost Longstreet and Forrest early in the War, in intense fighting in the West. Indeed, CSA never attempted to invade in the East, and AoP sat in Fredrick all game. All of the fighting took place in Kentucky, Texas and Tennessee. US Cavalry raided and destroyed Atlanta and Columbus GA (Wilson’s raid), and cut the rail net through Tennessee, limiting the CSA’s ability to move troops strategically. CSA scored a half-dozen reinforcement cards, to none for the US, but then lacked the ability to move the troops. CSA first converted, then lost Kentucky to the US, but retained Columbus. US converted WVA, and CSA converted Missouri, to balance out the Border States. EP occurred in the Fall of 1862. Jackson was pinned down in Texas almost the entire time, trying to dislodge a stubborn US force, led by Henry Halleck. US managed to close the NA zone for a few turns, and then the WG zone for a few turns, but used its AA ability most often on the river first, with Grant finally cracking the Paducah-Columbus-Dover strongholds in the Spring of 1863. Strategically, the US benefitted from mobility (cards) and Forts and many good battle resolutions (die rolls), but might have wished for a few more reinforcements. CSA benefitted for more than a dozen reinforcements, several discarders and a strong defense at the Paducah-Dover-Columbus triangle, which held until Grant pounded it with the US AoT. At the time of the concession, the CSA AoT was trapped in Indiana and about to be overwhelmed, and the US AoT (Grant) is about to open up the Missisippi River and capture Memphis. The CSA has more SP’s, but they are widely dispersed and cannot blunt Grant’s offensive, nor threaten DC, to counter. All in all a great game, and I enjoyed competing with Falk, who is a fine and capable player and was timely and considerate in filing his moves (even though he is in Germany and I am in the US).

    1861 : When US is completely occupied by the preparation of the blockade (UBL = 2, AA = 2), WV (is forced by Virginian soldiers to) chose the confederate side. Follows the first great battle and first great confederate victory (great battle and great confederate victory are synonymous is this play). But, at the end of the year, the Kentucky acclaims its liberators and joins the Union.

    1862 : The year begins as an Annus Horribilis with 3 raids through Pittsburg in PE, OH and IN thanks to Lee at the head of the new AOW. In summer, there still is a forth raid in OH as it is not so easy to clean the grey plague and in fall, another great battle in Strasburg VA. The balance of the year is saved by a land of Curtis who takes control of Florida and a raid of Pope through Arkansas until Sabine. A quick counter-attack save AR but Texas surrender.

    1863 : Grant is sent to the west to unblock the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers. He succeeds, destroying Dover and Columbus, looting Nashville and Memphis and, last but not least, helping Pope to annex AR. But Lee avails to face only Burnside to send another raid in OH through Parkersburg. Grant doesn’t care and goes south, cut the confederacy (Mississippi river) and liberate LA but not MS (saved twice by AS Johnston). But, as a nightmare, the year finishes with a new raid (the sixth) in PA through the Shenandoah Valley.

    1964 : The year starts with a campaign for trapping the AOW in Harpers Ferry. Lee escapes thanks to an interception card. Sherman takes then the place of McClellan and goes straight to Richmond. He destroys 9sp and 2 armies during his journey and let the Confederacy completely exhausted (only 12 sp on the map). Meeting is arranged in Appotamox.

    USA captures Fort P-J and burns Memphis.
    W. Virginia and Kentucky to the CSA early.
    Pope and 2SP take Sabine City TX, then Red River Campaign sees Pope drive Texas our of the war.
    CSA attempts invasion of Western PA, but Rosecrans moves to cut the LOC.
    Beauregard and 2SP in a fort in Parkerburg WV.

    1862
    CSA opens the Spring Campaign with a campaign to set up for an invasion of the North, but Halleck forms the AoT in Pittsburg and frustrates the plan. He just manages to save the army with a timely retreat before battle into Ohio.
    CSA starts the Summer Campaign with a campaign and tries to destroy Halleck and the AoT, but a timely intercept roll saves him and Lee rolls poorly in the battle. CSA losses mount quickly and both CSA armies are in WV.
    Farragut captures fort Fisher and USA SPs threaten New Bern. Longstreet comes south to drive them out. This leaves Richmond weakly defended and with the last action the Army of the Potomac captures Richmond, putting the CSA capital to flight.
    Pope expands the USA SW front to Vicksburg MS and Camden AR. A.S. Johnston to Jackson MS to confront him.
    Jackson forms an army in Louisville, drives Rosecrans from Bloomington and raids Indiana. Both CSA armies leave WV to defend VA and prevent it from leaving the war, while the USA starts to convert WV to the USA side.

    1863
    Spring 1863 is a very bad turn for the CSA. Both West Virginia and Virginia are lost.
    Grant builds the Army of the Cumberland to contest Jackson at Louisville, but has to move to Parkersburg WV when Lee invades WV and plans to move to Western PA. Jackson crosses the Ohio, but fails to properly cover the crossing and Rosecrans leads an AA from Grant’s army to capture the fort at Louisville and cut off Jackson. Jackson attempts to move to WV to get back into supply, but Grant intercepts and destroys his army. By the end of the Spring turn the CSA SW is down to 31-.
    In the Summer Kentucky is brought under USA control.
    Jackson leads a large raiding party through WV and into Western PA to raid PA while Grant and his army prepare to invade Tennessee. Forts Morgan and Gadson are captured to close the last of the Gulf Ports to blockade runners.
    During the Fall Campaign Grant moves West and drives Tennessee out of the war. Pope moves to recover the raided spaces in Western PA
    The CSA uses a discarder at the end of the turn to have Longstreet move with a large corps through WV and Pittsburg to maintain the raid in PA and add OH to the list of raided states.

    1864
    Grant is wastes time taking the fort in Columbus KY, then attempts to countermarch back to Georgia, but the CSA has multiple ‘3’ cards and the ANV is able to march through NE Alabama to keep ahead of him.
    USA captures Fort Pulaski, while the CSA comes within 1 space of converting Missouri. CSA uses the Galveston event to recapture Fort Gadson and open an East Gulf port!
    Longstreet’s raiding force is cornered in Ohio and USA retakes enough spaces to avoid any raids. CSA railroad degradation event helped a great deal.
    At the start of the Summer turn the CSA SW is down to ‘2’ and the Richmond Bread Riots event sends it to zero to end the game.

    1861
    This year is characterized by an incredible lack of initiative of the Union Government (the first 3OP card in round 3 and only one). J Jhonston use this immobility of enemy soldiers to build a fort at Acquia Creek in the spring, occupy Maryland in summer and expel Lincoln from WDC in the Fall.

    1862
    The new capital is localised in Annapolis. The AONV take the initiative to attack immediatly the new capitol. This first large battle doesn’t succeed but the second one (thanks to a concentration card) is enough to burn the new capital. The union SW is too low to continue the war.

    CSA had a lot of luck with the draws during these 3 turns: 2 major concentration cards and 2 discarders, which allow CSA to concentrate troops and to raid Maryland during Turn1 and Pennsylvania during turn 2 and 3. Washington DC fall turn 3. War weariness, at the end of year 1861, was the last nail in Union coffin.

    All the action happened on East front. At the end of turn 3, only 1PC was added in KY and 2PC to WV.

    General McClellan became a casualty in the Summer 1862 while in command of the Army of the Cumberland during the battle of Washington DC (Army Commanders may become casualties in battles triggered by a concentration event such as Shiloh). The Union Government was put to flight as a result of the Confederate victory.
    At that time General Butler was in command of the 1 SP garrison at Baltimore MD. The mourning and defeated Army of the Cumberland retreated to Baltimore where General Butler was appointed to the fatal post of Army commander (the only other General in the Army being General Stoneman).
    Immediately attacked by the Army of the West (General J. Johnston commanding, with Generals Jackson and Wheeler in staff), the Army of the Cumberland successfully avoided battle retreating to York, to then successfully intercept a last move thrust by General Jackson towards Philadelphia, winning the ensuing battle.
    At the opening of the Fall 1862 General Lee’s 15 SP Army of the Tennessee immediately attacked (with a rare play of a first Campaign Card) on Philadelphia, but General Butler and the 10 SP Army of the Cumberland retreated to Harrisburg.
    The Union responded with a Minor Campaign, and with the second activation General Butler moved the Army towards Frederick and Washington to try and cut Lee’s communications, but the move was marred by a mud march and the Army of the Cumberland had to stop at Gettysburg.
    Lee’s pursuit went through Harrisburg where Butler attempted to intercept, unsuccessfully. Lee proceeded to control Harrisburg and York to then attack at Gettysburg where a battle would have been a certain large battle victory.
    General Butler and the out of supply Army of the Cumberland managed to retreat to again to Chambersburg but were now in a very tight spot: with J. Johnston’s Army of the West at Strasburg blocking the escape route of the Shenandoah valley, and with Harrisburg under Confederate occupation, Lee’s was now going to leave a garrison at Gettysburg and attack the AoC via Harper’s Ferry. The high chance of a failed interception there would mean a certain large battle defeat at Chambersburg, and being completely surrounded Butler’s 10 SP AoC faced the very real risk of being captured.
    Play of the second Campaign in a row allowed Union general Hooker to open the path to Frederick where Lee declined to Intercept (as intercepting would have left the AoC free to escape through Harrisburg), so the AoC could escape through the Frederick Gap.
    The overall service record for General Butler shows one battle (a victory at Philadelphia) and five attempted manoeuvres: three retreats before battle (all successful) and two interceptions (one successful).

    Another notable fact is that as at the point in which peace talks started, the Confederates controlled most of Pennsylvania and Maryland and the whole of Delaware, General Lee’s Army of 7 SPs was at Gettysburg while the Confederates controlled four Union State Capitals and occupied a fifth (Indianapolis, unwillingly host to General Jackson and his force of 6 Confederate SPs).

    Early game: Confederates took Kentucky, while the Union took WV and Missouri. The Confederates played conservatively in turns 1-3, and then were stymied by a discarder in turn 4. The Union received zero early blockade cards, which was only partially offset by the complete lack of Confederate reinforcements. The Union mounted a formidible defense in the East, so Lee took his turn 4-6 campaign across the Ohio river, gaining just enough of a foothold to raid Indiana on turns 4-7. The Union stayed on the offensive, taking Florida. Jackson tried unsuccessfully to expand the raid to Illinois, but constant Union pressure kept him too busy putting out fires, so the Union was able to get to Turn 7 and Grant’s arrival in good shape.

    Mid-Game: Grant spent turn 7 stabilizing the Union position and then went onto the attack on turn 8, taking Kentucky from the Confederates. The key move was when I left the AoW two spaces from Dover, and Grant took a 6 space march OOS to take it and seal off the Western approaches to the state. (Gary relentlessly exploited any crack I left open for him.) Turn 9 saw the Union turn on dime to launch a two-army assault on Richmond that Joe Johnston and the ANV barely fought off. In turn 10, the assault on Richmond continued, but Lee led the AoT to Virginia to relieve some pressure and force the AoP to retreat by sea back to the North.

    End Game: With the arrival of Sherman, the focus switched back to the West, as the Union AoT campaigned across Tennessee. It was joined by the newly formed AoM, under Hancock, which burned it’s way through Mississippi while the Union AoT was pinning Jackson’s AoW in the area of Missionary Ridge. Jefferson Davis reacted by sending the ANV on an 800 mile march from North Carolina to Mississippi. But Hancock and the AoM reached Jackson MS first, which proved crucial. From that central position, the AoM was able to extend both South into LA and West into Arkansas. Arkansas was driven from the Confederacy, but I was able to keep Tennessee from falling by using my 7th card each turn to flip back just enough PCs to keep it from surrendering. As we entered the last couple of turns, I was feeling decent about my position until I read the rules about winning the game by taking 10 states. I honestly never gave it much thought, but it ends up being pretty easy, requiring just 8 states and a 50 SW lead. With the 3 border states, Arkansas and Florida, Gary needed just three states to win. Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee appeared ripe for the taking, so I had to abandon my defensive lines and go on the attack. The ANV won a very lucky combat, driving the AoM from Jackson down into Louisiana. I then used my interior lines to move the AoW from Missionary Ridge through Missippi and into Texas. This protected enough states to let the Confederates eak out a very narrow and very lucky win.

    The Union actually had great cards for the first 5 turns, with lots of 3-Ops (only 4x 1-Op cards). So with lots of initiatives, Union was able to attack everywhere in the Confederacy. It took TX and pulled off Emancipation by 1861. The CSA was resource poor, drawing only a few SP reinforcements at this stage. So it did not go on the offensive too much. It did managed to get the border states and 1 raid off. But the Union quickly retook back the border states except KY and built up strong defensive positions in the East.

    Longstreet built up an army in the West and barely got across the Ohio River before Grant arrived. Grant quickly bludgeoned the Rebel army and cut it off. CSA was saved by some good cards, including the timely arrival of much needed reinforcements. After Longstreet’s army was destroyed, he came back to command an corps in Nashville where he displayed brilliant tactics in defending Dover and Nashville (i.e. rolling high!). The turning point was when Grant’s re-supplied 15-sp army was attritioned to 2 SP and forced to hightailed out of town, scurrying all the way back to Ohio.

    Time and again, Grant would try to smash thru TN and Nashville. Time and again, Longstreet would block and parry the Union attack. As Tolga exclaimed, Longstreet’s corps danced like a butterfly when evading, sting like a bee when fighting. They are forever immortalized as the Iron Butterfly Corps, as they withstood repeated assaults, saved Nashville and prevented the conversion of KY. Ultimately, they saved the Confederacy!

    Both Richmond and DC fell in this game. Trenton became the new USA capital and Augusta GA the new CSA capital.

    A lack of blockade values was made up for by an early closing of the Eastern Gulf zone and late the Western Gulf zone.

    The Union capital almost fell a second time when a CSA army was repelled at a fort in Philadelphia.

    An electoral defeat for Lincoln: before the last Strategy Card play the Union could expect to finish the Turn with a Strategic Will of exactly 50 (-) SW.
    Last Confederate Strategy Card of the game was “Cabinet Intrigue”, causing the fatal swing.
    Other interesting fact about this game: Confederates had better cards and better dice rolls. The Washington DC rail link was cut for 7 out of 10 Reinforcement Phases.
    Eleven out of twenty-two Confederate Generals were killed in action (including two killed as a result of the play of “Costly Mistake”, including Generals Jackson, Forrest and Stuart). The Union lost 5 out of 23 employed.
    The Union mustered a total of 172 SPs versus a total mobilization of 155 for the Confederacy.
    Sixty-two battles were fought, 32 of which within Union States. The Union won 27 and the Confederacy 35.
    General J. Johnston was the commander in 9 battles and was undefeated.
    On 10 occasions the dice were irrelevant to the result; out of the other 52 battles, the Union had the favour of the dice on 17 occasions (33%), while the Confederates had the advantage 26 times (or 50%); on 9 occasions the dice were tied, including 3 times at 6-6 and 2 times at 1-1.
    Thomas’ comment was:
    “Cabinet Intrigue? Stab in my back… Too bad, a last turn would have been fun.
    Baltimore Revolt, turn1, was the 1st of a long list or painful events! This last turn is a perfect illustration; it seemed to me that you always held in your hand the most effective card to block my last move (I remember an interruption card which didn’t allowed me to take back control on east front). Your skills during your attacks explain this.
    I was always on defence, and my limitation of movement during first turns led me to hazardous actions. May be I should have been more careful, but your attacks didn’t let me a lot of choice.
    When I realized I could probably not win this game, my personal objectives were at least to keep W-DC and hold on until 1865.”
    Domenico’s comment was:
    “It was a very challenging and fun game. I felt throughout the game that I had by far the better luck.
    I knew this would be a stern test, and despite the fact that I had better luck and the wind blowing at my back throughout the game, your masterful defence always prevented me from having a chance to deal a killing blow.
    Your inspired defence of the Northeast from well-chosen positions around Gettysburg, and your latest invasion of Missouri exploiting the ground near Rolla show remarkable ability in placing your forces so as to be both safe and menacing at the same time.
    You always showed me the point of your sword and I never could see the opening I needed to deal a killing blow: time and again I regretfully had to settle for using my better Cards for second best side cuts.
    I could appreciate the increasing gravity of the damage being inflicted as the rail link to DC continued to be severed, but rightfully I was concerned at the thought of the increasing drms provided by the newly arriving Union Generals combined with the terrible price the Confederacy was paying in terms of Generals killed.”

    Cards and dice favored the Union early on. Forward to Richmond backfired on the CSA as Union surprisingly won the battle, forcing the CSA capital to relocate. Union was able to launch offensive operations throughout the entire East coast, shutting down at least one zone and taking out FL. With the eastern half of CSA nearly isolated, CSA saw the writings on the wall and resigned.

    The Union was gifted with great cards throughout the game, seeing only a handful of 1 cards in the first 6 turns and getting half a dozen campaign cards. With superior reinforcements and complete mobility, the Union nipped at the Confederacy continuously, never letting them get a good offensive going. The campaign cards helped to allow the Union to take Texas and close a blockade zone in the first six turns, while still counterattacking prospective Confederate armies. When Grant arrived, a series of battles were fought for control of Kentucky, with the Union numbers eventually forcing the Confederates to abandon the state. Two campaigns allowed the Union to also close a second blockade zone and take Florida on turn 7. This triple blow made it obvious that the Confederacy could not survive a protracted game, and so Dominique threw in the towel. It is rare that the cards end up being this one sided, but in this case, they really decided the game.

    CSA was doing well. Kentucky had been taken early. Had also taken +10 / -10 in an offensive into Ohio / Indiana around turn 5. Light losses. The USA had Manassas and Sabine City but little else.
    Then Grant came in and captured Kentucky and burnt Nashville. He swung west and passed through Little Rock on his way to capture Texas. Then the CSA under Lee and the AotW captured DC at the very end of turn 8. The USA missed several key interceptions while Grant was ravaging Texas; as well as losing a 50-50 battle for DC itself.

    CSA fought a brilliant defense, stamping out every single Union incursions to the South. Bill kept the Confederacy intact, not losing any states and took KY. But the cost was allowing the Union to build up and extended CSA forces from VA to TX. When USA have the cards, Union forces were able to slowly outflank the weakened defense around VA and trap its forces. With EP played, Blockade at 3, and Grant showing up, the writing was on the wall. CSA resigned when AONV was destroyed and Richmond taken on T7.

    The North took and held Manassas early, as West Virginia. Nashville was burnt. Later, Kentucky and Missouri also went to the North. The South had one solid raid into Indiana. With Grant’s arrival, he burnt Memphis and swung south. The south had a Major Campaign at the end, followed by a Minor Campaign at the beginning, and wiped out Grant’s Army. The North nonetheless took Florida, as well as Charleston, Savannah, and Columbus GA; ending the turn with a Major Campaign of their own. A Union raiding force even got into Jackson MI and Vicksburg. The South was in ruins, and with Grant’s return, and being heavily outnumbered, Lee surrendered.
