Other than being eliminated in round 1 of the WBC FtP 2013 tournament, this is the only tournament game I’ve played. I don’t know what an AREA rating is, so I assume mine is pretty low or zero!
Unusual factors: I had all 4 armies in play and controlled both Missouri and Kentucky. I’ve never had all 4 armies and probably only controlled both of those states once. No one went into West Virginia. The ANV, with about 20 SP’s in the area to draw on, displaced 5 Union forts in the process of taking DC and raiding Maryland.

I Don’t know our Area Ratings.

USA took WV early while CSA took KY. Lee went to the west and achieved his first 2 Raids on Turn 4. Turn 5 I misread 3 Cigars card and failed to use it to intercept and trap Lee. I would have won a large battle and destroyed Lees army. Max got his 3rd Raid and was dangerously close to doubling my SW. (I almost threw in the towel)

Turn 6 I had FI (Max SW was 110), and Max had EP. Max created an army reducing SW to 108. My last cardplay I used FI to cut off Max’s army in north via occupying southern KY spaces. This included winning a medium battle against 1 rebel SP and Max had to play EP for the event rather than spreading out and getting 3 Raids in the midwest. Max still got a Raid(#4) but EP saved me from being eliminated on SW.

Turn 7 KY went Union and my AoM took out Memphis, LR and Marshall. Turn 8 Max managed his 5th and final Raid(PA), Turn 10 Richmond fell and was converted. Max moved his capital to Jackson MS. I almost took VA but Max played a Minor CC as his last card and held onto the state. Turn 11 Grant and Sherman, both with large armies, chase the AnV(JJ commanding) around VA in circles. Max had both Major CC’s this turn and sharply used them to tweak Grant and Shermans noses.

Turn 12 my 2 big boys finally drive the AnV out of VA and I take the state. Turn 13 Grant with 15SP takes a run through the deep South pursued and attacked repeatedly the entire way. He converts Augusta and then after having suffered many battles, with only 1SP remaining, he converts Atlanta, Macon and Columbus on 1 card. Next, Max takes revenge, wiping out the army. My AoM then makes a play for Nashville. Lee’s army moves to protect it and AoM changes direction heading for Jackson MS. General Jackson flies to defend his namesake capital but fails. AoM displaces CSA capital for second time, driving CSA SW down to zero (-13).

It ended on the last card play of the last turn. As Max pointed out, MH’s ideal game!

CSA did not formed an army, and Bragg wounded up being in charge at Richmond. AOP took advantage and hammered its way thru, displacing Rebel capital and burning Richmond. Next turn, Lee was cutoff in Manassas and suffered too much loss that he would have been displaced to track. CSA resigned.

The CSA was able to occupy all of MD and cut off DC on turn 1.
On turn 2 the USA was initially successfully in reclaiming DC although at considerable cost in troops.
The Union suffered additional heavy losses while unsuccessfully attempting to stop the formation of the AoNV.
The AoNV was also able to pound the AotP when the USA tried to go Forward to Richmond on their final card play.
At the end of the 2nd turn DC and down to a garrison of 2sp while CSA raids were ongoing in MD and PA.
With no reinforcements expected as enlistments expired, the USA conceded.

Union began to blockade West Golf Zone on the T1 while CSA took Kentucky.
At the end of fall 1863, Union took Louisiana but after a CSA’s minor campaign, DC was surrounded. Situation was critical for Union. But Grant arrived. He saved DC and succeeded to surround the CSA Army.
Before the destruction of his army, Lee offered his reddition.

CSA played a very well-played defensive game. USA had a bad turn in the mid-game when an attack to trigger Emancipation Proclamation was misjudged. Fortunately, the card came back a few turns later. That same turn, 2 CSA states, 1 border state and 3-4 resource centers fell. CSA remained resilient to the last, conceding only after a failed attempt to charge at Washington, DC after destroying the Army of the Potomac (the taking of DC would have dropped USA SW close to or below 50 with Turn 12 approaching). After this, CSA felt the strangulation of the blockade due to 2 closed blockade zones. With CSA SW at 9- at the start of turn 11, and USA holding 2 SW-reducing cards, USA offered for CSA to concede, which was accepted. This was a very fun game against a humble opponent…and probably one of the better “simulation” experiences I have had with FTP.

The Union took Missouri, West Virginia and dueled over Kentucky, then on turn 4 the CSA broke through and cut off DC, raiding PA, and MD. Turn 5 saw the Union push the CSA out of Kentucky and land in Texas. McClellan broke through to DC only to be encircled and isolated with a fort in Aquia Creek. Turn 6 Pope’s counter-offensive takes Baltimore and forces the ANV into the AOW’s space, eliminating the ANV, but the Lee lead AOW pushes Pope from Baltimore and into Wilmington, while occupying NJ, PA, and MD. Southern Religious Revival takes place in Baltimore to keep Pope’s AOC bottled up.

A end-run to the West through Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and into Texas fails for the US as two OOS corps duel over Marshall, TX, but the US is thrown back to Shreveport. A last play Chickamauga sees the CSA keeping Arkansas in the Confederacy and combined with the raids of MD, PA, NJ, and war weariness results in the US asking for peace terms.

Apart from a bad turn 1 hand USA had excellent cards, Turn 1 Confederacy took Kentucky, USA made up a 3 phase Ops queue to get to Mannassas. However 2 Campaigns Turn 2, and another 3 allowed an aggressive attack on Virginia which fell turn 2 after a lucky attack on an oos Richmond before AoNV was formed and Kentucky was retaken. Turn 3 saw a very weak Confederacy successfully holding off multiple threats against another good USA hand but turn 4 with another respectable USA hand Texas collapsed and the West cut off from main Confederacy with the West Blockade zone controlled. With no real Counterattack prospects CSA conceded. CSA seemed to have collected considerably more than 50% 1 cards over the whole game!.

    1861
Very quiet year, the lack of locomotives and railways slow the activity (twice !). Anyway, in fall, the confederation welcome the Kentucky. During this time, the union take control of New Madrid. It seems very anecdotic but it will be very important in 1862

    1862
Lee create the AOT and, via Louisville, make 2 raids in IN and IL. Worst, he cuts the RF in the west zone. But taking the fort PJ, the union is abble to send SR from WDC to… New Madrid.
Fortunatly, Jackson is there to conter attack. Burnside unblocks the RF of the west zone but Lee and Jacson block the RF of the central zone with 3 raids (IL, IN and OH). In fall, TX and MO fall in the blue side of the force but 4 raids (the same more PA) force Abraham to recognize the independance of the confederation

Did not resolve final CSA card play as AV was obvious, so SPs reflect pre-attrition situation.
CSA held IL, IN, OH. Would have been only 6 Union reinforcements on next turn. Union pushed blockade to 4 by Turn 4. But then the 3s became more scarce and the CSA drew movement (7 1s on Turns 2 and 3). Lee headed to Ohio, Jackson to Illinois.

Both Richmond and DC fell in this game. Trenton became the new USA capital and Augusta GA the new CSA capital.

A lack of blockade values was made up for by an early closing of the Eastern Gulf zone and late the Western Gulf zone.

The Union capital almost fell a second time when a CSA army was repelled at a fort in Philadelphia.

Early EP and some desperate defence saw the USA in a solid position with Grant about to form his Army, causing the CSA to concede. Neither side could put together a decisive series of cards/moves; although the CSA still got a couple of raids in and USA managed to generate enough of a naval threat to counter.

CSA took KY and WVA early then fought off several avenues of attack from the Union including TX, LA, KY, TN and FL. Pat had me reacting and on the defence but by moving last each turn, I was able to set up an offense. No EP or FI event occured and no discarders. AoT under Jackson operated in the west raiding IN & IL, AoNV under Lee in the east raided PA. Grant took the fort at Columbus but could not advance further. Twice, Pat had 5 SP corps that were blasted by 15 SP armies. AoP was run in circles thanks to Lee’s retreat/intercept ability.

CSA got an early raid, but USA was able to shut down WGBZ, take Texas by turn 2 and make lots of progress up and down the Mississippi River eliminating forts and burning resource centers. No action at all in MO and KY, but WV was heavily contested changing hands twice. A game of extreme attrition with two CSA armies destroyed and lots of other SPs eliminated in other battles, thus bringing out the CSA concession.

This was a rough one for the CSA. I had a great first-turn hand and was able to take out JJ, capture Ft. P/J, and send Butler to Sabine City. I had great cards throughout (a Campaign each turn). Columbus fell on T2. CSA resigned before its last card play of T3 as TX and AR had enough Union PCs to be converted and Van Dorn was caught in IN after the fort in Louisville was captured.

No CSA raids. Union drew only three blockade cards for the game, one of which was discarded. A second was reversed, so blockade only reached level 3. W. Gulf periodically disrupted, otherwise all other zones remained open. 3 separate invasions of Texas were repulsed. Union arms were blessed with a long-odds victory by AoP over AoNV in Hanover VA at the opening of a major campaign in 1862. Depleted AoNV reduced to SP2 retreated into North Carolina. Union had to halt movement on Richmond to play Emancipation Proclamation. Richmond fell with the next card. After that the tenacious CSA defense returned. USA managed to pry Missouri lose in Spring 1863 and to bring Virginia back into the fold only in Spring 1864. With CSA SW down to 1(-), Jackson in command of AoW with Forrest as Cav Commander and Hardee as Deputy CO, launched a bid to both preserve CSA control of KY and gain a large battle win with an attack on Sherman’s AoM. Both sides +7 DRM, 2/6 combo gave USA the large battle victory and the win.

  24. Correction on the above, blockade level briefly reached level 2, then returned to level 1.

T8 saw more Grant counter-attacks against weakened Lee, and march to Pitt to trap Johnstown AoNV, but timely csa major cc allowed Lee to win +9 battle with 4sp super-army to reopen LOC for AoNV, allowing it to escape to Grafton & replenish AoW to 6sp, while rail-move from Charleston to Richmond with 5sp force. This allowed Lee to increase to 12sp force at Pitt and force usa defensive heels. The South was aided with three campaign cards in the first three turns. On the last turn the South also got a discard card. With these two helpful cards the South was able to break though Harper’s Ferry and go to Harrisburg, Baltimore and finally DC, where McClellan without calvary was unable to intercept and save the beleaguered capital, and greatly increase his chances of becoming the 17th president of the United States. But his failure did increase his chances of becoming the 2nd vice president of the Confederated States of America.

    • * Union completed conquest of all Mississippi ports. First time I have ever seen this accomplished.
    • AR, LA, MS, and TN were knocked out of the war
    • * Only three generals died (2 CSA).
    • * A Johnston and McClellan stared each other down most of the game in Manassas and Frederick.
    • * Union made an early incursion into VA using Corps movement, but the AoNV eventually pushed them about.
    • * McDowell spent the whole game being a garrison in DC, dispatching troops out via Strategic Movement. No general was ever added to McDowell’s training camp in DC. Lincoln never ordered a March on Richmond.
    • * McClellan formed his own defensive army in Frederick and followed McDowell’s defensive posture.
    • * Burnside dug in with a large Corps at Grafton WV in a Fort.
    • * Most of the fighting was in the west with the Union systematically pushing through KY into Tennessee at Nashville. Forts in Nashville and Bowling Green gave the Union a good base to push deeper into TN and eventually threatened to cut off Columbus KY and Dover TN, forcing the CSA to abandon those forts.
    • * Taking advantage of early AA modifier events the Union next focus on taking LA. Meade established a large Corps in Springfield to force the CSA to defend MS
    • * Later Sherman and Grant marched their armies down MS and Grant sneaked through into AL burning Selma and drawing Lee’s army that way while Sherman finished off MS and took out the fort at Vicksburg. Grant’s army was sacrificed to accomplish this. At this point, AR was cut off and knocked out.
    • * Texas would have been the next easy state to knock out, but the South’s will had been snapped, so Texas remained unoccupied by Union forces.
    • * CSA player’s first game, I think. Hard side to play lacking experience.
    • * The Union had a lot of high op cards and reinforcement cards as well.

Union chose to focus its attacks on west front, while holding on east front, until Grant arrived. This strategy gave results (with the help of good card, so Union troops could move): Texas joined Union after summer 1861 and Kentucky after fall 1861. In the meantime blocus was raised up to 3. During all the year 1862, Union faced Confederate reaction on west front. CSA tried to raid Illinois and build a fort in Paducah and Cairo. This raid failed, but Missouri joined CSA. Blocade level decreased t o2.
Beginning of 1863: Grant was finally sent to West front, to minimize CSA destruction. Same strategy still applied: West first. Arkansas followed its neighbors after summer 1863. Fall 1863 was a deadly turn for CSA, with the help of 2 campaign cards, Union took control of LA and MS. CSA concession followed (beginning of 1864, situation would be: SW 102- / 24- ; SP 55/30 ; arrival of Sherman to take care of east front while Grant stay in Tennessee).

Only 1 general killed during this war (Longstreet). No emancipation proclamation (not even a missed one).

Union had great cards early on, managing to close the W Gulf Zone for a while and admitting WV. But fortune turned during 1862 when Union cards were not so good while Rebel got hot. While Union forces were sluggish in moves, the Rebels were on a tear with Campaigns cards and discard. CSA got off several raids for several turns, enough to double the USA SW.

    Additional interesting information:

    – AoP intercepted Beauregard in Baltimore on the Spring 61 turn
    – 4 Large Battles (2 CSA won, 2 USA won);
    – Emancipation Proclamation went into effect only in Fall 1864
    – CSA was 4/8 on intercept attempts, 3 of the 4 misses were by Lee and Longstreet – both WITH CAV!
    – Price managed two retreats (w/o cav) in the face of Grant’s AoC
    – USA was 6 for 6 on amphibious assaults, including two assaults at 3-2 ratio (Sabine Fall 61, and New Orleans Spring 63) that saw rolls of 6 (USA) to 1 (CSA) for a 1*/0 USA wins! The second of those was part of an amazing sequence in which USA played the Monitor card to remove a CSA ironclad at New Orleans. CSA responded playing a new ironclad card, placing it in New Orleans, defended at SP2. USA launched an amphibious assault with McDowell and SP3 from Washington DC and won the combat 1*/1. Unbelievable!
    – CSA conducted only one successful raid – at the end of Fall 1864, placing PC markers in Chambersburg PA, Harrisburg PA, and Philadelphia PA
    – Very few campaign cards until very end of the game. USA had 2 minor campaigns (Summer 62 and Fall 63); CSA had a minor campaign (Summer 62), before drawing 5 campaign cards on the final 2 turns (major and minor campaigns in Fall 64; and 3 minor campaigns in Spring 65. This was a hard fought game. The Union made more mistakes but had better luck with the dice rolls which more than compensated for the mistakes. The game easily could have gone down to the wire on turn 13 if it hadn’t been for a series of unlikely dice rolls that went against the CSA. Longstreet, commanding the AoNV, repeatedly rolled sixes while attempting to intercept/evade in the defense of Richmond. This led to two large battles that the Union won, followed by a Union assault on Richmond which Longstreet failed to intercept.

After an early failed Union offensive against Richmond, this game remained eerily quiet in the East. The West remained a game of alternating small maneuver and attrition centered about the last remaining Confederate bastion on the Mississippi, Memphis. Much happened but little was decided until Grant’s Army of the Tennessee abandoned its LoC with the North and headed for the heart of the Mississippi, forcing Longstreet’s Army of Mississippi to emerge from its fortified lines and expose itself to defeat in open battle.

After heavy fight south reached 0sw. Greys did a very succesful offensive in the center for several turns, but the arrival of Grant slowly changed the tide. Special things in this game were the unlikely battles won by blues, blockade level was zero at the end of the game, as first blockade card north drew was in turn 10 and a lot of many interceptions failed by both sides.
    Great game.

CSA had a good opening hand including a minor campaign and enemy discard a card. Kentucky and West Virginia both went to the CSA at the end of turn one. On turn three Pope led the Union Army of the Tennessee into Kentucky. The CSA formed a CSA Army of the Tennessee with Bragg and Van Dorn as a Cavalry Brigade at Louisville with a FORT. The CSA was able to cut Pope out of supply and surround him in a medium battle at +5 / +0. With this loss the union surrendered.

Interesting points: too many to list. Some highlights:
Both sides got a Major campaign and several Minor ones over the course of the game. CSA got both Strategic concentration cards in 1861. CSA isolated DC in turn 1, but a Federal overrun of a Confederate SP triggered emancipation in turn 2. CSA captured Kentucky early and held it until the end of the Summer of 1864. CSA occupied all of Maryland at the end of Summer 1864, but had to empty Richmond to do it, which led to Federals taking Richmond during the first move of turn 12. Grant spent most of his time sitting in Springfield LA staring at Lee in Holmsville MS (and making failed attacks) while the AotP in Williamsburg spent more than a year just staring at the AoNV without doing anything. Very close game throughout. Federals managed to connect with and destroy the AoNV at one point in 1861, but didn’t have the moves to capitalize on their success.

On game turn one the US took Fort P-J
On game turn two the South played an interception card so the Union was able to use it’s last card – a major campaign – to breadcrumb through Kentucky, Northern Virginia, and Mississippi and to burn Jackson.
On game turn three the North used a discard card to get the last move again and burned the Columbus-Dalton-Atlanta metroplex area.
On game turn four Lee and Forrest at the head of an army attacked Atlanta, but Buell intercepted on a 1 and Forrest bit the dust. The south unable to remove those pesky Yankees from the pork belly of the South conceded.
Let it be duly noted that the South got no reinforcement cards in the game and crappy rolls of the die.

CSA received 22 sp from cards. No raid until 1863. Richmond held out against army of Potomac 3 consecutive turns with 1,0,1 sp within the city following which AoP marched into an empty capital.

Union got 3 minor campaigns in the first 5 turns. Confederacy got no campaigns, but did get to play two “opponent discards a card” cards. Union pushed everything at Virginia, managed to keep the Confederates from concentrating sufficiently to form an Army, and managed to capture Richmond, but had to strip the West of troops, effectively giving Kentucky, Missouri, and parts of Indiana to the Confederacy in the process. The Confederacy conceded the game shortly after an out-of-supply Curtis with 2SPs intercepted Polk (in command of 6SPs) and won a highly improbable 1/3 victory in favor of the defender in KY to cut A. Johnston off from supply in Indiana.

Union had nice cards, taking WVA and KY, and closing the E Gulf Zone. But USA failed to put any pressure on CSA, allowing the Rebels to steadily build-up. When Burnside lost a critical large battle and failed a key interception, CSA got off several raids, which forced a concession from USA.

This was a deadly game for CSA generals. 5 of them died before the end of turn 5: Johnston, Johnson, Stuart, Pemberton, and Morgan. It was also a bloodbath for Johnny Reb and Billy Yank with only 27 SPs surviving the war. On turn 1 The CSA occupied Kentucky while the USA had a successful Red River Campaign and shut down the Western Gulf blockade zone. Texas returned to the Union fold on turn 2. The remainder of the game was dominated by a no holds barred battle for the East. On turn 4 both sides lost their capitals, and the governments relocated to Philadelphia and Macon. The game ended when Lee’s Army of the West was intercepted at Frederick, MD and lost its final SPs in a Pyrrhic victory.

Jackson was killed in the first battle he was in despite being one 6 or 7 .
Lee took KY forcing Grant westward allowing a newly formed ANV with Longstreet CIC to hang onto VA by holding the key position of Hanover in the face of several assaults. This gave the CSA the position to do a last move raid into PA for the win after we exchanged discarders .

The CSA lost both Richmond and Virginia early I the game. It looked bleak. The CSA managed to take 3 spaces in Illinois for three turns, but a Union Campaign card dislodged them. The CSA also took Missouri, but the USA took both WV and KY. Eventually, the USA took Dover after much fighting. Later, Nashville fell, but Memphis held. The USA took over much of TN, and drove hard on Atlanta. Jackson, a Fort, and the AoW held Atlanta despite Sherman’s repeated assaults. Lee and Grant stalemated near Memphis. Saint Marks kept the blockade zone open, and Florida almost fell to the USA. On the last turn, both USA armies swung towards Memphis with a minor campaign. The CSA lost Memphis after winning a large battle, and AoM under Lee had to pull back to Vicksburg to successfully defend the New Capital at Jackson in yet another large battle. Meanwhile, Jackson and the AoW won third large battle at at Kingston and miraculously made it to Demopolis to block the 2 Union armies from breaking through. The CSA held on to the win. The USA gained West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee; as well as about 50 SW. It was not enough to win. Jefferson Davis maintained control of the Confederacy!

csa had bad dice that prevented breaching Manassas-Frederick in DC area, and taking KY. This allowed Pope to foray deep into csa in the west and wreak havoc, including taking TX and moving to Pollard before being stopped by Longstreet. By then Grant appeared and took Dover, and oos 10 sp Jackson force in Nashville fort, ultimately taking TN. Longstreet army was destroyed in large battle win at Atlanta against Grant, but csa did not have fort and allowed Grant to subsequently sack it and march to Columbus-GA. Separate corps marched from FL to Charleston to split csa into 3 parts east of Mississippi.

Union started off great, closing the W Gulf Zone and converting TX. But then CSA drew good cards, destroying AOP on T2 when it failed a critical interception. CSA continued drawing multiple Campaigns and good rolls, taking KY, cutting Union rail at Philly, and pulled off several raids. But CSA left the West totally defenseless, allowing USA to slowly strangle the Rebels. When Grant finally arrived, his attrition attacks forced a concession from CSA.

    • Adding to that: the Union got Frederick Douglass, a Minor Campaign, and two more 3OC cards on the first turn. The Confederacy got back in the game by taking out the AotP, and had fantastic luck drawing campaign cards throughout the game, but simply didn’t have the manpower to capitalize on them. 1SP would have made the difference between success and failure destroying the AotP. The Confederacy would have been able to make up for losing the west if DC had been taken, but the 1SP DC garrison managed to roll a 6 to win the critical fight, and the Union gradually recovered via superior manpower, getting to go last on two consecutive turns, and superb gameplay. Also worth noting was a series of fantastically improbable blockade runner failures. With a Blockade level of 1, out of twelve rolls over four turns, six of them were 1s).

    – Union clearing out Trans-Miss with minimal CSA opposition
    – Union capture Richmond early (Summer 1863) succeeding on just better than a 50/50 attack
    – Confederate offensive into Indiana disrupted by an amphib assault on their fort in Louisville by a strong Union ironclad fleet (AA mod was 4)
    – CSA suffering through hands with many “1” cards including one that allowed Grant’s AOT to break back into Kentucky
    – Union play of Mud March and then Major Campaign to sack the new Confederate capital in Macon to end the game.

CSA was in this game for the long haul, carefully watching attrition and keeping USA off-guard for a good portion of the game with core CSA play mechanics. USA blockade denied CSA many SPs which it replaced with cards. Grant played mainly a defensive role after and during USA closure of the western states – Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana fell. Once Sherman entered the game, USA blockade rose to 5, Kentucky finally flipped back to Union control, and USA took naval control of the Mississippi River, at which point CSA resigned. Neither capital was gravely threatened and this game was generally won in the West.

Almost the first three turns were easily dominated by USA: fall of several forts on Mississippi River, Capture of Memphis and fall of Texas. Fornutaly with the last card played in T3, Kentucky and West Virginia joined CSA.
In turn 4, with 2 armies in VA, the South took Washington by a large turning movement (Pittsburg-> Baltimore -> Washington). In the same time, North played good cards for taking Vicksburg.
At the start of Turn 5, Union tried to retake Washington and failed by loosing 3 batlles on a raw. The war was over.

USA removed 2 CSA units in Richmond area by card, Joe Johnstone fell back to 2 in Hannover with Beauregard and himself in Richmond with the remaining unit. AoP pounced South using all available SPs, JJ intercepted and defeated AoP. Concentration card allowed a CSA counterattack into Washington leaving 1 at Manassas and Washington and then a trivial attack. Unlucky intercept for USA and definitely unfortunate to find Western Concentration in CSA hand.

USA had 6 campaigns, 2 discarders, & high OPs hands for first 6 turns. Took KY, Dover, Nashville, MO, and converted 8 MIss. PC. Csa fought holding action to hang on to tenuous LOC for TX and prevent TN-Miss. conversion, while concentrating forces on east. Lee won large battle at Frederick and cut off DC, then AoNV & Lee raided PA & OH. When AoP took Manassas after failed csa intercept-defense, AoP proceeded to attack Richmond garrisoned by 1sp. After csa won defense roll, Jackson corps elim AoP and turned the tide. Grant never forming army prevented usa from mounting sustained attack on entrenched AoNV at Pitt, or Lee in OH.

USA had excellent cards with a minor campaign in turn 1 and a major campaign in turn 3. Not too much action in the first two turns – Union has to discard in turn 2 so went into defensive mode that the Confederates were unable to exploit due to not having a third general with AoNV to lead a raid. In turn 3, Rosecrans and the Army of Missouri captured Columbus, KY opening the upper Mississippi, then continued south. With a Strategy Board, Halleck captured Fort Sumter. This was followed by the Major Campaign: Halleck hopped over to Charleston to burn it; Rosecrans burned Memphis; and Buell solidified the Union hold on Kentucky by defeating a small force under A. Johnston. Finally, a Confederate force under Van Dorn was able to raid into Pennsylvania. Kentucky declared for the Union.
In turn 4, Van Dorn and his one remaining SP were surrounded in Lewistown, PA with no way to escape. Halleck sailed from Charleston to Pensacola to open a new front, and Rosecrans marched overland to Yazoo City to establish a new LOC, then burned Jackson and ended in Holmsville. CSA surrendered with no viable force in the west to oppose Halleck or Rosecrans and several western states sure to fall in rapid order.

Great game. The South was able to bring over Kentucky and Missouri while holding in the east. The Union counter thrusts into Missouri was frustrated twice, by the South, cutting the North’s LoC, first with Forrest and then Smith. (turns 4 and 5). Turn 5 ended with AoNV taking Pittsburgh and using a Minor to retain Missouri and raid across PA and into Trenton, cutting off D.C. The South was lucky and opened Turn 6 with a Major, driving the AoP into D.C. with 6sps left and encircling and destroying a 9sp fort at Harper’s Ferry using the a corps led by Longstreet and the AoW putting in a final attack. With the AoP masked off in D.C., and only a corps in Ohio, the North resigned.

If anything characterized this game, it was a shortage of Cav for the CSA, and the uncanny ability of McDowell to make his intercept when it really counted.

Early Game: Everything started off in favor of the CSA. Kentucky went south on turn 1, which triggered Foreign Intervention on turn 2. Union managed to secure MO, and WV.

Turn 4: The CSA took some serious blows when Lee (n8) headed out west to break into the North at Bloomington. 2 battles, of which he lost the first, losing 3 each time, and then a desperate counter-attack by Pope who was guarding WV. Lee blew his evade roll, and even though he won the battle, his army (and 2 cav) were destroyed. Forward to Richmond forced the destruction of the Union training army (under McClellan in WDC). The CSA offered a large battle at unfavorable odds to McDowel’s AoP, which he accepted and won, but this left a hole in the Union line, which allowed the CSA to cut the rail link to WDC. Losses were heavy enough for CSA that another Cav brigade was destroyed. Blockade to 1.

Turn 5: Lee rebuilds in Richmond, and the AoW and AoP engage in a series of battles (after the North cleaned up the mess from last turn), bleeding both, but slowly pushing the AoP back into Maryland. However, Jackson was killed in the final battle to push the North off of CSA territory. East Gulf is closed.

Turn 6: CSA has a discarder and a Minor Campaign. 3 attempts by Lee, Longstreet, and VD try to break though Maryland via Frederick and the valley, forcing McDowell to attempt and make all 3 intercepts(!), and defeat the rebels in 3 key battles. McDowell for President in ’64! West Gulf is closed.

Turn 7: Grant arrives out west, and immediately begins the invasion of Kentucky. A series of battles between Longstreet and Grant for Louisville, which falls to the Union on the 3rd assault, which also kills Morgan. Blockade to 2.

Turn 8: More battles in Kentucky, as Grant attempts to conquer the state. Grant occupies the state, but loses his Cav in the battle. But somehow he wins against Longstreet’s final counter-attack, and Kentucky joins the Union. AoP attacks Manassas in a large battle that they lose, but the AoNV (& Cav) are destroyed in the battle, & Forrest is killed. Blockade to 4 (+ Food shortage).

Turn 9: AoP wins at Manassas, which triggers EP. Grant bypasses Nashville, and destroys the river forts. South Atlantic is closed.

Turn10: Lee engages McDowell in a large battle, which Lee loses. Grant heads south, to occupy Texas, and most of AR, while the navy occupies Florida. Lee gathers more troops, and with a discarder for the double-end move, attempts to grab WDC. He sneaks past McDowell up the valley, but McDowell makes the intercept on the 2nd move into Frederick, and wins his final large battle. With their armies smashed, morale at -1, and Texas and Florida captured, the Confederacy surrenders.

The South went on the offensive early gaining West Virginia. On turn 2 the CSA also gained Kentucky. The North had solid defenses. The CSA raided into the North just before Grant got in, and gained 15 points. It took time for Grant to dislodge one CSA invasion in Ohio, and another in Pennsylvania, but he got the job done. The USA gained back West Virginia, and then Kentucky, but it took time. Nashville also fell, but Dover and Columbus KY did not. On turn 11 the North pushed hard against Richmond until a second CSA army in Knoxville moved up to Franklin and placed a PC. Still, on turn 12 Richmond and Virginia fell, and the AoNV withdrew in fine order. The AoW held Memphis and Tennessee all game long, and the AoM held the rout down towards Atlanta. Grant took North Carolina, and tried to send Pope won with a Corps to dislodge the new Capital in Selma, but the Union efforts were too little too late. Lincoln lost the election of 1864, and McClennan wisely sued for peace with the CSA.

Early EP followed by good mobility allowed the US to keep the CSA from raiding. Key reinforcement cards allowed US to concentrate forces and not suffer from attrition. Once Grant arrived, USA was able to send an Army around Richmond, cutting the rail net , and into North Carolina. Grant then closed the NA zone, and returned North Carolina to the Union. As we sit, Grant is in North Carolina with 14 SP, and reinforcements expected. DC is safe, with a high number of SP and good leaders and Forts. CSA could raid, but then it stands to lose 1-2 more states per turn. CSA conceded when unable to counter Grant in the Deep South.

CSA took all border states and made several raids but USA got timely EP and blockade cards, and took FL to keep SW under control. USA then embarked on a campaign of attrition via state control, blockade and large battles until CSA strength was seriously eroded. CSA mustered all three armies he had on the map in the East to launch raids and isolate Washington; USA countered with it’s two on map armies and after a series of manoeuvres and large battles, the CSA AoW led by Lee was destroyed and USA forces were unopposed in the West. CSA conceded with a large sp imbalance.

South didn’t break into the north until the Summer of 1864, with a 2 state raid that cut off production in Illinois. South did manage to grab all Border states, though only Kentucky remained in control at the end. Texas was also conquered in Summer of 1864. 2 Blockade zones closed at the end, but most of them were open for most of the war. The South’s earlier attempts to break into the North lead to a few large battles, which gave the South SW at the expense of troops.

Key turn was the Summer of 1863, when the South was forced to play EP. The double move by the North resulted in the destruction of 2 CSA armies in the East, and a general retreat to Richmond, now defended by Longstreet’s corp.

The CSA chose to launch an offensive in the West to break into the North, rather than rebuild armies in the East. It was initially successful, but the North finally started to launch assault after assault on Richmond. Even with reduced production, the North could still SR more troops into Virginia than the South could. Eventually Lee was displaced, and Longstreet KIA, and the south ran out of generals and troops to throw into the meat grinder. Richmond (and then Virginia) fell, and that was sufficient to push SW down to 0.

Felt Like an unusual game for several reasons. Lots of Union Campaigns, but combat (and general casualty) rolls were disproportionately in the Confederates’ favor (statistically, the Confederacy should have lost 4 generals, but instead just lost Bragg; the Union should have maybe lost one, but instead lost Halleck, Hooker, and Reynolds). Deck was reshuffled twice due to failed foreign intervention, but Emancipation never came up.

Turn 1: Union opens with a Minor Campaign (#1). McDowell takes Strasburg and Manassas, sending JJ to the turn track and leaving Beauregard with 3 SPs in VA. Confederacy plays a Major campaign to redistribute forces (puling Beauregard back to Richmond), and then shifts AJ and 2SPs to Richmond on the next move. Confederacy ends turn by forming the AoNV.

Turn 2: Confederacy plays Forward to Richmond at an opportune time on a slightly understrength AotP, resulting in its destruction by the AoNV (previously reinforced by 8SPs during the reinforcement and strategy move phases). Confederacy retakes northern Virginia. Union uses two more Minor Campaigns (#2, #3) to halt confederate progress and recover ground. Confederacy uses a Minor Campaign of its own (the last Confederate campaign of the game, as it turned out), to recover Fort Monroe and retire to a safe position in Richmond.

Turn 3: Confederacy plays War in the West and Choctaw Indians to force the Union to discard two cards, but low ops cards and a Union attack by Pope to interrupt an ops queue on AJ prevent the Confederacy from fully capitalizing on its advantage. Turn ends with McClellan in Frederick staring at AJ in Strasburg. Confederacy also takes KY.

Turn 4: Union re-creates the AotP under McClellan in Frederick. Confederacy creates the AotW under Lee in Richmond. Lee pushes McClellan out of Frederick. Mac retreats to DC. Buell hands the Confederates defeats in KY and TN. McClellan fails to intercept Lee, who then takes Baltimore. Union Plays a Minor Campaign (#4) to take back Manassas, Baltimore, trap, and attrit Lee (down to n3). Last move of the turn, McClellan again fails an intercept roll, allowing Lee to both break out of the trap, and cut off DC again. Deck is reshuffled due to failed Foreign intervention.

Turn 5: More jockeying for position in the east, while Buell continues unopposed in the West. Union plays another Minor Campaign (#5). In desperation, Lee attacks a McClellan-defended DC for the 33% chance of success – and succeeds! Nevertheless, Union still prevents any Confederate raids in the east. Deck is reshuffled again due to another failed Foreign Intervention.

Turn 6: Union capital relocates to Springfield IL. Confederates entrench in DC. McClellan forts up in Baltimore. Most of the turn is spent reorganizing and rebuilding by both sides. Union forms the AotC in Philadelphia. Confederacy puts Longstreet in charge of the AotT in Tennessee. Confederacy fails to make headway in the east.

Turn 7: Grant enters and immediately begins wearing down the Confederacy in the east. A knee-jerk interception blunder on the part of the Confederacy during the first move of another Union Minor Campaign (#6) is partially compensated for by a good die roll allowing AJ to prevent McClellan from putting Lee out of supply again during the second campaign move (though McClellan retakes DC without a fight). Confederacy spends its last move of the turn to shift the 6SP AotT to Knoxville TN.

Turn 8: Confederacy goes for broke with Longstreet, Jackson, and Wheeler, pushing Hooker out of West Virginia and making an end run around Pope to displace the Union capital in Springfield IL. With the AotT (n5) in Ohio, 3 spaces in PA under confederate control, and a successful interception and defeat of Grant by AJ in Maryland, the Union concedes.

    1861

Auspicious beginnings for the Confederacy before any significant fighting as Confederate flags rise across the state of Kentucky, and Jefferson Davis sends emissaries across the Atlantic. But, untimely riots in Richmond suspend the diplomatic overtures. Pope drives toward Nashville, prompting the South to concentrate with a two-space intercept to save the city. Unfortunately, for President Davis, Spring 1861 would turn out to be the high point of the Confederacy, as an ill-timed campaign to New Mexico leads to the rare Union double-turn to close out the year. Uncontested, Rosecrans returns Kentucky to the Union while Rebel loyalists maintain their hold on the western counties of Virginia. Burnside dies in a training accident reducing Union mobility in the Eastern theatre. Union 104(-) / Confederacy 100(+)

    1862

Lee arrives in Richmond while Pope returns to Kentucky. Halleck captures both Fts. Gadson and Morgan, closing the East Gulf Zone in one season. Lee clears token opposition in western Virginia, but spring mud slows down the likely invasion. Pope convinces Lincoln to embark on a diversionary campaign against a lightly defended west. Davis takes the bait and finds religion, quickly raising the Army of Mississippi under Longstreet in McKenzie, charged with defending the fort line on all the western rivers. Pope’s gambit pays off when Longstreet’s lack of cavalry scouts fail to respond to the assault on the forts and a previously unknown subordinate, Grant, is instrumental in capturing Forts Henry, Donelson, and Nashville. Lee abandons his invasion plans and heads west to face Pope, who burns Nashville before Lee forces him out of the ruins, losing Van Dorn in the victory. With no further invasion threat, the western counties of Virginia rejoin the Union as a separate state. Halleck also opens the Mississippi, capturing Forts Philip-Jackson. The Confederacy assumes a defensive posture for the remainder of the war. Union 115(-) / Confederacy 75(-)

    1863

Lincoln rewards Grant with his own command, heading the new Army of the Missouri in nearby Bloomington, who quickly flanks Lee in eastern Tennessee. In the only large battle of the war, Grant leaves his supply lines to victoriously intercept Lee and push him back to Chattanooga, leaving the road to Atlanta open. Rather than returning to his supply, Grant marches to the sea, connecting with the Union Navy in Columbus. As Lee gives chase, Grant will complete this maneuver two more times to Mobile and New Orleans, while putting the torch to Atlanta, Macon, Columbus, Selma, and Jackson. Meawhile, Halleck establishes a beachhead in Sabine and appears to have closed out the entire Gulf coast only for the Union Navy to discover a previously unknown fort in St. Marks. Stonewall Jackson and Albert Sidney Johnston die in successive defenses of Hanover. The year ends with Memphis the last remaining resource center between the Mississippi and the Appalachians. Union 129(-) / Confederacy 51(-)

    1864

Davis is optimistic as his commanders outline two separate campaigns to regain the initiative. Unfortunately, these plans failed to account for the shortage in locomotives and they are forced to alter the remaining campaign to defensive measures. Halleck breaks through Hood’s defenses in the second battle of Nacogdoches, leading to the fall of both Texas and Louisiana. Sherman follows Grant’s footsteps and re-establishes the northern supply line to Atlanta, putting Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama out of supply. And, in yet another march to the sea, Hancock detaches from Grant and invades Florida to close out the spring. Pope and Banks launch a mostly unsuccessful campaign against the remaining Rebel holdouts in western Tennessee and Kentucky but for the attrition effect. In the South’s two best upset victories, the rebuilt Cumberland-Tennessee fort complex repulses Pope’s two assaults, though Longstreet does lose his Army of Mississippi in the second battle, which is also the final meaningful battle of the war. Reynolds detaches from Grant and secures Alabama, and in the fall, with Union garrisons on the few Confederate outposts in Missouri, Arkansas poised to fall, and Pope occupying an empty (but not yet destroyed) Memphis, Davis resigns.

    Union 128(+) / Confederacy 9(-)
Also, Union controls 6 states (Ken, WV, Tex, La, Fla, Ala) and, with a 100 SW advantage to serve as the other four states, is currently in position for a campaign victory.

In keeping with history, neither side was able to gain the advantage in Missouri, site of the most battles historically, though undoubtedly an uncommon game result for one that ends in 1864.

Very timely Union discarders and also some early luck on the naval assaults.

CSA play of Forward to Richmond backfired, resulting in the loss of Richmond early on T2. By end of 1861, CSA SW was down to 31, almost in a hopeless downward spiral. CSA put up a good delaying fight in 1862 with the arrival of the Legends in Gray. But they were not able to reverse the deteriorating situation. The arrival of Grant and EP declared caused CSA SW to drop to single digit and will shortly to zero.

JJ saved its army with an infinite luck die roll. After that, JJ’s AoNV cleared a way through blue troops to reach Richmond. There reinforced again and with help of Longstreet corp, went back to the north via Shenandoah to threaten WDC. Later, the entrance of Lee gave the confederacy a raid through the Ohio river, and another raid in Pennsylvania. Trying to delete the possibility of more raids, blues opened the door to the displacement of northern capital as greys had major campaign.

Union took KY early but sadly wasn’t able to get much going after that. They suffered from the early loss of Pope and Burnside, followed by several hands chock full of “1” cards. This allowed the Confederates to raid up through West VIrginia and get raids of Ohio (for 1 turn) and PA, NJ, DE (for multiple turns). DC however never fell as McClellan held onto it and made all his critical intercept rolls. However the loss of rail lines into DC gave the CSA the lead in SP which was eventually too much for the Union. Almost no action at all in the west except for the taking of Cairo and Missouri by the Confederates on the final turn.

CSA was able to raid into OH and IN early in 1862, but got its army trapped and destroyed. In the meantime, Union took KY and burned Nashville and Memphis. It was still evenly balanced into 1863, but Grant was not placed correctly and got displaced. CSA took the opportunity to raid into IN and IL. The loss of SP and SW due to raids eventually proved too much for the Union as it could barely hang on.

Arguably the best, closest game I’ve ever played. Came down to the last couple of cards of the last turn. I don’t think I’ve ever played a full campaign game that lasted that long, and I spent way more time than I want to admit staring at the board and considering moves. Even lost sleep over it. It was just that intense/exciting throughout.
Emancipation never popped, but thanks for Foreign intervention coming up repeatedly, the CSA got 4 Major Campaigns. However, the USA got 3 discarders.
Turn 1: USA ups the blockade level by 1 and takes 2SPs from AotP (n3) to take Fort Gadson. CSA plays 90-day enlistments expire. USA places PC marker in Fort Gadson. CSA attacks Frederick, but is intercepted by McDowell, but CSA wins the battle anyway (McDowell would have been better off numerically not attempting to intercept). USA shifts 1SP from PC’d fort Gadson to Columbus GA. CSA cuts off Baltimore and raids MD using JJ. USA SW 98-, CSA SW 100+
Turn 2: USA reinforces AotP in DC to n13 and attempts to move it to cut off J.Johnston. CSA interrupts with Guerilla Raids. USA then plays Empty Haversacks to interrupt the CSA rescue attempt. USA overruns Beau, isolates JJ, and takes back enough to MD to prevent another raid. CSA forms AoNV in Hanover under A. Johnston. USA forms AotM in Columbus GA under Banks (he was the only one available at the time). CSA takes Louisville KY with a SP.
Turn 3: CSA uses Bragg to attrit Banks’ AotM to make it ineffective offensively. USA plays War in the West, and the card CSA discards turns out to be a Minor Campaign. Davis Tours the South. USA takes WV and parts of northern VA (also retakes the rest of MD). CSA almost takes KY. USA SW 95-, CSA SW 100+.

Turn 4: Lee and the rest of the CSA cavalry arrive and make their presence felt. USA Promotes McClellan to command the AotP, relieves McDowell and sends him to command the AotM (relieving Banks). Lee gets an Army. USA attempt to break out of Columbus GA fails in a medium battle (despite having +3 to the CSA +0 DRM). CSA plays a strategic concentration card to bring Lee’s AotW up to n12, and then wins a Major Battle at Strasburg. Both sides lose a general. CSA loses JJ, USA loses Burnside (thankfully not Stoneman). USA takes Fort Morgan using SPs from the useless AotM , cutting off the EG blockade zone (a bacon-saving move, as it turns out). CSA takes Harper’s ferry. USA moves Pope into threatening position to try to delay CSA. CSA plays Minor Campaign to eliminate Pope as an effective force, and take the rest of KY. USA moves Pope again to pick up more forces and try to slow Lee down. Turn ends with Mac and the AotP in the Wilderness, Lee and the AotW in Harper’s Ferry, and AJ and the AoNV in Hanover.

Turn 5: A play of 2 interrupt cards by the USA allows Lee to be whittled down in a Major Battle and trapped north of the Potomac, but Lee takes DC anyway, thanks to an Ambush played to kill Pleasonton. Turn ends with Lee, Jackson, Pemberton, Forrest, and Smith in Baltimore but n2 and out of supply. CSA builds a fort in Louisville. USA relocates the capitol to Trenton NJ. USA SW 56-, CSA SW 104-

Turn 6: USA uses reinforcement phase to cordon off the AotW. USA division attack on the OOS AotW in Baltimore fails to cause any damage (they roll a 1). CSA division attack on the AotM in Columbus GA kills 2 SPs (they roll a 6). USA plays dysentery to whittle down CSA force defending Macon (to the point where a Medium battle win is Guaranteed if the USA attacks). CSA builds a fort in Paducah KY. USA plays a discard, which causes the CSA to discard Chickamauga. Pope moves into a position to stop any CSA invasions of IL, IN, or OH (previously stripped of SPs for the fighting in other theaters). CSA plays Stop the War, reducing USA SW to 51- (CSA SW at 100-). Pope destroys the CSA fort in Louisville (gets lucky on a 50/50 shot), and positions himself to stop a CSA raid in IL. USA SW 54+, CSA SW 99-. CSA plays Commerce Raider to drop USA SW to 50-. USA uses the only 3ops card it got that turn to move out the AotM and destroy Macon and Atlanta (USA SW 59+, CSA SW 92-). CSA moves Bragg to put the AotM out of supply. Turn ends with USA moving Pope to take Nashville and half of KY (not enough to flip the State, though). USA end-of-turn SW at 56- after War Weariness, CSA SW at 87-. CSA AotW still in Baltimore.
Turn 7: CSA reinforces AoNV to n16. USA tightens the cordon around the AotW (though this is tough to do with the CSA having parity of reinforcements. USA gives Grant an Army and builds forts in Strasburg and Manassas using the Washington Defenses event. CSA retakes territory in northern Virginia. USA plays Minor Campaign to save the AotM by retreating to Mobile AL, and make another 1SP division attack on the AotW in Baltimore (this one is successful, dropping the AotW to n1, meaning fewer USA SPs are needed to keep it contained. CSA starts taking MO. Grant attacks the CSA fort at Dover with a +5 DRM. Van Dorn, the commander, rolls a 6 and beats off the attack (Grant rolls a 3). Price retakes Louisville and puts Grant out of supply (losing an Army could prove fatal to USA SW). Grant pulls out of KY to Cincinnati (Price declines to intercept his retreat). Grant drops SPs along his line of withdrawal. Van Dorn completes the CSA occupation of MO. Beauregard invades WV and PA, setting the CSA up for a PA raid. The last USA card, Hooker moves through WV and fights just enough to put Beau out of Supply. The last CSA card is to activate the AotW and have it do a suicide attack to get Lee, Jackson, and Forrest back on the turn track (being without them for two full turns sucks). Jackson dies in the attack, however (a 1/6 chance). CSA SW at 92+ at the end of the turn, (lost AotW, but gained MO), USA SW still 56-.

Turn 8: Worst CSA hand of the tournament, as it turns out (six 1s, and one 2). Nevertheless, magnificent CSA damage control (as shall be seen). USA AotM moves from Mobile to take Jackson MS (USA SW 62+, CSA SW 83-), cutting off Lee in New Orleans, leaving just 2SPs in LA. Lee breaks out of the trap and retakes CSA spaces in AL, GA, TN, and KY, while Grant eliminates the CSA forts in Paducah, Columbus KY, and sacks Memphis TN, and the AotM takes Marshall TX. Instead of taking TX, for his last move of the turn, Grant opts to try to put Lee OOS and prevent him from re-forming another CSA Army in TN. Unfortunately, this involves putting Grant in a position where he’s out of supply, and needs to move one more time to get into supply. Unfortunately for the USA, CSA plays Forward to Richmond and the USA discards their last card, while in the meantime McClellan moves out of his reasonably strong defensive position and is intercepted in Hanover. McClellan fails his retreat roll from the CSA counterattack, and (to add insult to injury) only kills 1CSA SP in the battle that results in the destruction of the AotP for the rest of the game (also, Fremont dies the same way Burnside did). End of the turn SW: USA 59+ (thanks to taking Marshall TX), CSA 72-.
Turn 9: Meade and Stoneman hold the Strasburg/Manassas Line. USA spends most of the turn getting Grant back in supply (ends up in Vernon IL). CSA rebuilds the AotT under Lee, and rebuilds the fort in Louisville. Reynolds manages to take TX and parts of AR for the USA, also Fort St Philip/Jackson falls to amphibious assault thanks to Admiral Porter, closing off the WG blockade zone. CSA plays the first of its Major Campaigns of the game to get a raid in PA. End of turn SW: USA 48-, CSA 66+.

Turn 10: Sherman shows up in Philadelphia. CSA pulls the AoNV out of western PA (too extended if the USA has a campaign of any sort). Sherman re-establishes the Franklin-Strasburg-Manassas Line and most of PA is re-occupied. Grant and Lee start at each other all turn without moving. USA takes MO and AR (both basically undefended thanks to USA naval control). CSA shores up eastern defenses and plays Dixie Land. Also eliminates the Union Naval blockade. End of turn SW: USA 60+, CSA 46- (Lincoln will win re-election if nothing goes too wrong).

Turn 11: Half of the turn is spent by the USA adding Sheridan to the AotM, bringing it up to strength, and moving south to invade Mississippi and Louisiana. CSA spends the time forming another Army under Longstreet (in a way that doesn’t cost any SW for putting Longstreet in command). USA plays Wilson’s raid to sack Selma AL and put another PC marker in MS, and Cotton is King to lower CSA SW (which from Lincoln’s perspective is looking uncomfortably high). CSA Plays another Major campaign to get Longstreet to MS. In the last battle of the turn, a retreating Union force ends in a port space in LA to take the last space needed to bring LA back into the Union fold. Grant and Lee haven’t moved all turn. End-of-turn SW: USA 62+, CSA 31-Deck reshuffled due to Foreign intervention getting drawn again.

Turn 12: Sheridan and Thomas join Grant. Grant attacks the CSA fort in Louisville in a Medium battle with a +8 DRM and rolls a 1 and is repulsed by Lee. (Little did Grant know that Lee had a 2-space intercept and if Grant hadn’t dropped off the right number of SPs in each space, he would have lost a large battle, which would have been very harmful to USA SW. Grant manages to take Louisville on the 2nd attempt, but Sheridan is sent to the turn track in the process (CSA loses Bragg). CSA reinforces Lee. Grant attacks Lee for slightly better than 50/50 odds at winning a large battle. Lee declines to retreat, and Grant wins the battle (barely: both sides got a modified roll of 9). Longstreet uses a 2-space intercept/interrupt to defend Dover from Grant’s next attack, but Grant manages to win that fight (though Kilpatrick gets sent to the turn track this time as well). All these battles and garrison drops have reduced Grant from 15 SPs to 4 SPs in Dover (and that’s after getting 6SPs reinforcements picked up in Bloomington midway through). Of course, the CSA armies aren’t in great shape either (CSA AotM under Longstreet is in McKenzie TN, n2; AotT in Somerset KY, n4). Even so, that kind of puts paid to Grant’s offensive operations for the turn, with KY still in CSA hands. Davis Tours the South again (CSA SW to 25+). AotT retakes enough of KY to let CSA retain control, while USA AotM forces its way back into MS, inflicting 2:1 losses on the CSA in the process. 2nd-to-last USA card of the turn is to use Hooker and a detachment from Sherman (who hasn’t moved since he first arrived in turn 10) to cut off Lee’s supplies in KY. CSA plays a 3rd Major campaign and puts Lee back in supply, Lee re-consolidates in KY, and Hood moves to prevent Sherman from trying a back door approach to Richmond in the last USA move. The last USA move of the turn is to have Rosecrans and a detachment of the USA AotM put the CSA AotT and CSA AotM out of supply, by parking SPs in Winchester MS and Atlanta GA (Wytheville VA and Selma AL still have USA PC markers, and all other CSA resource spaces in the area have been destroyed). End of turn SW: USA 69- (thanks to taking the Mississippi), CSA 25+. Lincoln wins the election and the game goes into its final turn.

Turn 13: Closed blockade zones lower CSA SW to 18-. USA has 7 cards to reduce CSA SW by 18. USA does not draw a campaign, but does draw a discard (Railroad Degredation). CSA draws a 4th Major Campaign, but declines to start with it. First USA move is to use Grant (n15) to destroy the CSA AotM (CSA SW to 13-). Lee pulls the AotT out of KY, and brings it up to 7SP. USA moves Sheridan (n10) to make a backdoor attack near Richmond, wiping out Hood’s force. CSA plays its Major Campaign. AP Hill takes out Rosecrans’ unsupplied force in Atlanta, restoring CSA supply to the West. Lee attacks Sherman, but rolls poorly (Sherman n7, Lee n4). Sherman loses Thomas in the fighting, however. A final CSA division attack on Sherman also rolls poorly, leaving Sherman at n6 instead of n5. Sherman ignores the CSA attacks and drives on Fayetteville, destroying it (CSA SW to 10-). Lee pursues Sherman and they fight another medium battle. This time Lee wins and Sherman retreats to a CSA-controlled space (he also loses Stoneman in the process). Sherman ignores this loss and drives on Augusta (which he retreated in the direction of). Augusta destroyed (CSA SW to 6-). CSA plays reinforcement card. Grant occupies KY. CSA positions AP Hill in Northern AL. USA plays its discard, effectively ending the game.

A very close game, kind of a Hail Mary win by the CSA.

Turn 1: AotP destroys JJ’s force in Winchester, but fails to push Beau out of Manassas. CSA plays draft riots in New York. USA consolidates defenses in the east (garrison Baltimore, Fort in Frederick MD), while the CSA plays two events to get +6 SW (Davis Tours the South and Brazil recognizes the confederacy). USA places PC markers in Grafton and Lebanon.

Turn 2: During CSA general placement, J. Johnston ends up in Marion SC. AotP tries to attack a Bragg-led Corps in Hanover, but fails on the 50/50 shot at winning the battle. USA plays a discard and forces CSA to discard Purchasing Agents. USA takes more territory in Virginia, then lands an amphibious assault in Texas – CSA left Sabine City ungarrisoned, and pays for it by losing Texas. AoNV manages to retake Manassas.

Turn 3: USA player draws four 2s and two 1s (hand includes 3 Cigars and Valverde/Glorietta Pass). CSA draws four 1s (including Forward to Richmond), a 2, and a 3 ops card. CSA starts queuing up JJ to move. USA has Pope make a 1SP attack on JJ to disrupt the queue. JJ fails his retreat roll and Pope successfully connects (killing 2 CSA SPs), but dies in the process (1/6 chance). CSA plays its 3 ops card to have AoNV retreat to Hanover, then plays Forward to Richmond (which causes USA to discard 3 Cigars). AotP loses the resultant battle and ends up in Fredericksburg, then fails it’s 1/6 chance to intercept JJ and prevent the AotP’s destruction (though CSA barely wins the battle after rolling a 1 vs the USA’s 6). AotP destroyed, but USA plays another discard (Valverde Pass). CSA player (at 1 a.m.) forgets which turn it is and that Van Dorn is available for activation, so instead of playing for the ops to activate Van Dorn and try to take Frederick and cut off DC, just plays the last 1ops card for the event (Ball’s Bluff).

Turn 4: USA draws two 2s (Gov Isham Harris and George W Rains) and five 3 ops cards (Chickamauga, Choctaw Indians, 2 Minor Campaigns, and 1 Major Campaign). CSA draws two 1s, three 2s, and two 3s. USA shuffles generals and reforms the AotP, then has Buell and Banks completely ream the virtually undefended west (takes Arkansas completely, sacks Memphis, Little Rock, and Jackson, takes large parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama to Mobile, and cuts off both of the Gulf Blockade Zones, lowering total CSA reinforcements to 9SPs). Meanwhile, the CSA takes 4 moves to consolidate forces, form the AotW under Lee, and march it to the combat zone. The CSA attempt to take West Virginia and occupy Pittsburgh is thwarted when Rosecrans and Burnside intercept the AoNV at Wheeling (they roll a 1) and then beat it back to Grafton. CSA considers capitulating, then spends last card to build a fort in Parkersburg.

Turn 5: CSA uses all strat moves to transfer all forces to the East. Jackson and Longstreet join Lee and Forrest in the AotW. USA builds a fort in Columbus OH. CSA attacks AotP in Frederick, getting Jackson killed in his first battle (1/14 chance). Fortunately for the CSA, Mac’s cavalry general Stoneman dies in the fight as well (1/18 chance). USA activates Burnside to bring Pleasonton to join the AotP. CSA interrupts this with Guerilla Raids and uses the spare move to grab more forces and attack Mac in DC for a large battle (CSA +7 drm, USA +3 drm). CSA manages to win the large battle 5*/4 and takes DC (Lee n6 in DC, Mac n9 in Baltimore).
USA SW 66-, CSA SW 75+
USA takes Fort Gadson (putting the force occupying Columbus GA in supply). Halleck attacks Lee in DC in an attrition attack but rolls low. CSA plays a minor campaign to set up a raid in Ohio via Parkersburg. AoNV in an un-converted Cincinnati, AJ and 2SPs in Washington OH, and Longstreet and Wheeler protecting the supply lines through WV. USA plays an attack to pull Longstreet out of his supporting position. CSA plays detached cavalry for the ops to activate Van Dorn and have him reset Longstreet and Wheeler. For the final move, USA attacks AJ in a medium battle to force AoNV intercept and prevent the raid in OH. AoNV (JJ) fails intercept roll and AJ fights alone, but USA rolls poorly and AJ holds on.
Final Turn 5 SW: USA 64-, CSA 80+ (due to take a -7 hit during next reinforcements due to closed blockade zones).

Turn 6: USA capital relocates to Springfield IL (and draws no 1ops cards this turn). USA forms an Army under Hooker in Columbus GA (takes SW penalty to do so). CSA plays event card to build two forts (Atlanta, where the last CSA SP in the west other than Fort St Philip/Jackson is located, and Cincinnati). USA reinforces Greencastle IN blocking force and ups the blockade level while CSA consolidates forces under Longstreet and gives him an Army (also taking a SW penalty to do so). USA plays 3ops cards (including Shiloh) to place enough PC markers in MO to take the state. CSA plays Trent Affair for the event, and uses Van Dorn reinforce the AoNV and make an attrition attack on Halleck in Greencastle (kills 2USA SPs and goes to the turn track without dying). USA plays Red River Campaign to bolster Greencastle and Pittsburg garrisons (by taking Pleasonton out of the AotP and giving him to Hooker in the AotM, while Halleck keeps Mitchell in Greencastle, but takes the event SW penalty. Lee (n4) attempts to sneak by a cavalry-less McClellan to take Annapolis, but Mac manages to intercept into DC to stop Lee (though Lee still wins the battle 3/1, he loses Smith in the process, and the attempted Maryland raid is prevented). USA shuffles forces to bolster defenses again, making the AotP un-destroyable, but leaving Halleck and Mitchell n6 in Greencastle to do it. Last move of the turn, CSA tries to sneak along the river past USA Greencastle garrison. Halleck successfully intercepts to Bloomington with the entire Greencastle force and wins the battle (both sides roll a 1). As it turned out, though, this improbable loss worked to the CSA advantage. Turn ends with the USA having taken MO and successfully thwarted CSA attempts to get additional raids on every front (OH/IN, Pittsburgh, and Maryland), but War Weariness hits.
Turn 6 final SW: USA 56-; CSA 83+

Turn 7: Grant arrives. CSA rolls a 1 for one of its two remaining blockade runners. CSA SW drops from 83+ to to 74-. USA concentrates 11SPs with Grant in Bloomington during the strat move phase and leaves Greencastle empty. CSA concentrates most of its SPS with the AoNV (n10), leaving Lee and Longstreet n4, and n3, respectively. CSA draws no campaigns, but does draw Mud March (the only 1ops card drawn by it) as well as the last 2-space intercept in the deck. CSA activates the AoNV, which collects the entire garrison of the Cincinnati fort (AoNV n11) overruns a couple of USA 1SP garrisons in Indianapolis and Dayton, ending in Dayton (in position to interrupt-intercept to Greencastle). USA spends a 1ops card to make a 1ops division move to the empty CSA fort in Cincinnati. The AoNV fails its intercept (a common occurrence in this game), and the fort falls (USA SW 59+, CSA SW 73-). The USA 1SP then attacks the now-out-of-supply AoNV and rolls high, killing 2SPs (AoNV n9). CSA responds by spending a 3 ops card to rebuild the Cincinnati Fort. USA activates Grant (AotC n11) and moves to Greencastle. CSA plays interrupt and intercepts to Greencastle for a barely-qualifying Large battle. Grant rolls a 1 (+5 DRM) and JJ rolls a 3 (+7 DRM) for a 3/6 result in the CSA Favor. USA SW 51-, CSA SW 78+. CSA then activates Bragg, detaching him from the AoNV with sufficient force to displace the USA capital in Indianapolis and rejoin the AoNV. USA SW drops to 21- and the USA concedes the game.

CSA went into hyper aggressive mode early on, attacking DC on T1, which failed, but managed to cut off NE rail reinforcement. Mac got a lucky interception on T2 which won the battle and allowed EP to be played. This caused considerable manpower shortage for CSA. Rebel player doubled down and sent all SP to the East. Union drew relatively good cards to starve off immense Rebel pressure against DC. Then CSA drew 2 Major Campaigns on T3 which proved too much for the Union, cutting NE rail again and raided PA. CSA continued its pressure in the East, taking DC on T4, cutting cutting NE rail, and pulled off several raids on every turn in 1862! But CSA left the West totally defenseless, allowing USA to slowly strangle the Rebels. By T6, CSA was only getting 8 SP/turn. In trying to pull off a 3-state raid on the last card of T6, AOP made a critical interception and won the battle. This proved too much for the beleaguered Rebels as NE rail will be finally re-established and CSA SW whittled down to low 20’s. CSA player graciously resigned.

Union was blessed with good cards early on, trapping Rebels forces in VA. With good dice luck, AOP was able to take Richmond by Fall 1861, and almost converted VA. CSA can only consoled itself with converting KY and MO. Fortune changed in 1862 as Union drew 2 very bad hands. CSA reformed under Lee and then Jackson and managed to beat back all Union incursions in VA. With a Major Campaign, CSA forces were able to cut off NE rail reinforcement and achieved several raids by end of 1862. CSA continued its pressure in the East, trading attrition with Union forces under Grant. However, in so doing one CSA army was destroyed and another trapped in Philly. But the damage was done as Union reinforcement was less than CSA in all 3 turns of 1863. On T9, a re-constituted AONV under Lee won a large battle and broke thru to Frederick. The Union scraped the barrel to gather every available SP under Grant to try outflank Lee to cut its LOC. But Longstreet in the newly created AOT was able to out maneuver Grant and cut Union AOC’s supply. With With no more reserves, DC was easily taken and CSA raided further more, thus doubling the Union SW.

Throughout the game, Phil played very well, even under pressure when NE rail was cut. He displayed cheerful attitude and was a pleasure to play with. His FTP skill has risen steadily as he progressed through each round of this PBEM. As a first time finalist and pushing me all the way to end of 1863 showed that he has arrived at the Top Elite Circle of FTP.
